Wife Swap is an American reality TV show based on a popular British series of the same name that aired on the UK’s Channel 4 from 2003 to 2017. In the US, the show was broadcast on ABC (2004-2010; 2013) and Paramount Network (2019-2020). On ABC, the program was narrated by American actor John Schwab, who was later replaced by Brian Lee.

In 2017 (9 years after featuring the show), Jacob Stockdale murdered his mother and brother and attempted to commit suicide afterward.
- A $100 million suit against ABC. In one Wife Swap episode, Alicia Guastaferro appeared as a spoiled teenage girl who only cared about clothes, makeup, and hairstyles. In a while, Guastaferro came up with an enormous $100 million lawsuit against the network, claiming that her image was misinterpreted on the show, which resulted in bullying and panic attacks. The outcome of this process was never disclosed.
- A “gay swap” scandal. Jeffrey and Melissa Bedford from Oklahoma joined another Wife Swap episode in 2004. But they were shocked when they discovered that their exchange couple were same-sex male partners. The Bedfords even filed a $10.2 million lawsuit against ABC because of this incident. But it later appeared that the swapped couple could be either female or male, according to the show’s rules. In fact, single-sex families appeared on both US and UK editions of the show multiple times since then.
- Offensive remarks and their outcomes. In 2009, Steve Fowler from San Francisco joined the show, swapping his wife with a family from Missouri. During the episode, Fowler made several insulting comments about his co-star. This immediately turned the entire Wife Swap audience against him. When the man’s address was exposed online, his house was attacked and vandalized by furious fans. Besides, Fowler lost his job and had to publicly apologize for what he said.
