What Is an IP Address?
Everyone online has a public Internet Protocol (IP) address — a unique numerical name assigned to every electronic device connected to the Internet. It’s the digital world’s equivalent of your home or work mailing address. An IP address identifies your device among billions of others and locates it. Without an IP address, two devices can’t find and exchange information with each other.
How does this exchange happen? Pretty simple. First, you type the website's name, say, sample.com, in the search engine. The thing is that your device speaks the digital language and only understands numbers. So it looks for this website's IP address and then loads the page on the screen.

When connected to Wi-Fi:
- Go to Settings, then Network & Internet and Wi-Fi.
- Select the network you’re on.
- Click on Properties.
- Scroll down to the bottom — you'll see your IP next to “IPv4 address”
When connected to the Ethernet network:
- Click on the Ethernet network icon in the taskbar.
- Select the network you’re on.
- Click on Properties.

IPv4 vs. IPv6 Addresses
The IP addresses appearance depends on which version of the Internet protocol you are using - IPv4 or IPv6. What's the difference?

IPv4
Most Internet service providers (ISPs) around the world use IPv4. It consists of four decimal numbers from 0 to 255, which are separated by dots. For example, 102.85.96.1. This is a pretty simple set of numbers that is easy to remember.
But that’s the sole advantage of IPv4. This IP version generates only 4.3 billion unique IP addresses because it uses just 32 bits. This is nowhere near enough since the Internet is swarming with users. So, IPv4 will soon exhaust itself because there won’t be any unique IP addresses left.

IPv6
This is where IPv6 comes in. It was introduced to make sure the world would not run out of address numbers anytime soon. IPv6 uses 128 bits, which provides 3.4 x 1038 possible addresses. It consists of eight 16-bit hexadecimal blocks, separated by colons, which looks like this: 2600:CC40:2200:0000:0000:0000:0000:0002.
If a number group in an address contains just 0, the protocol will most likely skip it to save space. Instead, colons will be added to show a gap. For example, 2600:CC40:2200::02.
Why is IPv6 not fully implemented?
The number of possible addresses is what sets IPv4 and IPv6 apart. The second offers a larger pool of IP addresses and is claimed to have better quality and connectivity. So, why hasn’t the world switched just to this IP version? Two main reasons are behind this:
- IPv6 is incompatible with IPv4. This directly affects users — if your device uses an IPv6 protocol, you will no longer access IPv4 websites and see most of your beloved content on the Internet.
- Most ISPs use IPv4 because, well, they still can — its number of IP addresses hasn’t run out yet. So until IPv4 completely exhausts its pool of addresses, we won’t see a complete shift towards its younger counterpart.
Public vs. Private IP Addresses
Let’s say you have a home network made up of several devices — your computer, phone, tablet, and so on. Your router assigns a private IP address to each device on your network so that they all could identify each other. But when you connect to the Internet, your private IP address is replaced with a public IP address. Your ISP gives you this one, and it’s visible to website owners.
So, a public IP address identifies your device online, while a private IP address is used by a private network to connect securely to other devices within it. How do you find each one? Google “What is my IP address” to know what your public IP is. And to find your private IP, go to your device’s internal settings.
