What is Pawn Stars about?
Pawn Stars is an American reality TV series produced by Leftfield Pictures and airing on the History network. The show follows World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop – a family business in Las Vegas, Nevada, run by Richard Harrison, his son Rick, grandson Corey, and Corey’s childhood friend, Austin (Chumlee). Along with other staff members of the shop, they buy, sell, and pawn various artifacts.
In each episode, customers bring 5 to 6 unique items to the shop. Although the Harrisons’ business primarily focuses on jewelry, the artifacts introduced in the show vary, from a World War I gas mask to a prehistoric mammoth tooth. That’s why many episodes feature experts in different fields. Apart from discussing antique items and evaluating them, the shop’s members interact with customers and resolve family conflicts.
Meet the members of the Gold & Silver pawn shop
Get to know the main and supporting staff of World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop – experts in finding valuable artifacts and running a successful family business.
- Richard “Rick” Kevin Harrison – the co-owner of Gold & Silver pawn shop and Richard “The Old Man” Harrison’s son. Rick’s nickname on the series is “The Spotter” (because of his ability to spot rare relics). His favorite historical period is the Royal Navy (late 1700s – early 1800s).
- Richard Benjamin “The Old Man” Harrison – the founder and patriarch of the pawn shop since 1989. He was passionate about his family business and showed a special interest in rare and vintage cars. “The Old Man” retired in 2017 and died a year later.
- Corey Harrison – Rick’s son, who started polishing artifacts in the shop when he was 9. Corey was nicknamed “Big Hoss” and often argued with his father and grandfather. Among all the shop’s staff members, he is the most likely to buy expensive items and hopes to take over the family business one day.
- Austin “Chumlee” Russell – Corey’s childhood friend who joined the shop when he was 21. Chumlee is majorly responsible for testing, loading, and registering items. Although Austin is often mocked for his lack of knowledge and expertise, he eventually turns out to be experienced in unexpected fields, such as pinball machines, gas-powered toy cars, and classic sneakers.
Pawn Stars spin-offs
Since Pawn Stars has become the most successful reality TV show on History, the channel created multiple spin-offs and similar series. Here are the most notable ones:
- American Restoration. This show starred Rick Dale and his daily activities at Rick’s Restorations shop.
- Cajun Pawn Stars. This spin-off uses the same format as the original Pawn Stars series. It follows Jimmie DeRamus and his family running Silver Dollar Pawn & Jewelry Center in Alexandria, Louisiana.
- Counting Cars. In this series, Danny “The Count” Koker and his staff restore and innovate ancient cars at Count’s Kustoms.
- Pawnography. In this game show on the History channel hosted by Christopher Titus, the contestants answer various questions regarding artifacts from the Gold & Silver pawn shop, fighting for the chance to win a valuable item.
- Pawn Stars Do America. In the latest Pawn Stars spin-off, Rick, Corey, and Chumlee travel across the US, looking for unique artifacts and historical finds.
