VeePN Stops Supporting Windows Legacy. What Does This Mean for You?
From now on, our VPN service will no longer support legacy Windows versions, including Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. We made this decision to encourage users to update their devices to the latest versions – Windows 10 and 11. But if you’re still running an older Windows OS, you have several options to keep using the VeePN app on your device. This article will clear things up and provide answers to all related questions.
Which Windows versions are still supported by VeePN?
VeePN VPN and Antivirus are still available for legacy Windows. But if you use our app with an outdated Windows operating system, you won’t be able to get our latest updates, patches, and features that come with the official VeePN software. Here’s a brief overview of the Windows versions we keep supporting and those that won’t get further updates:
Windows 11 | All VeePN updates are supported |
Windows 10 | All VeePN updates are supported |
Windows 8.1 | VeePN updates are no longer supported |
Windows 8 | VeePN updates are no longer supported |
Windows 7 | VeePN updates are no longer supported |
Why VeePN stops Windows legacy support
We decided to stop supporting outdated versions of Windows due to several reasons, the most important being your security. The VeePN application was designed to protect users against cyber-threats and make their digital lives safer. The best way to achieve it is by keeping up with the latest technologies that allow for advanced security practices we are striving to implement.
In turn, older technologies like Windows 8.1 and older don’t allow for such improvements as they are obsolete and, accordingly, more vulnerable. Moreover, Microsoft itself stopped providing updates for legacy Windows operating systems. Here are some details on the most recent fixes for these Windows OS versions:
- Windows 7: No updates since January 2020
- Windows 8: No updates since January 2016
- Windows 8.1: No updates since January 2023
Outdated technologies are prone to various risks and vulnerabilities due to the lack of important security improvements. Regularly updating your software is one of the essential cyber-hygiene practices we at VeePN recommend our customers follow.
Also, the rejection of older Windows OS support will let us improve our approaches to development and testing. Our team will be able to implement more modern and versatile technologies and frameworks, leading to improved security, performance, and overall quality of our products.
But what if you are still using a legacy Windows system and can’t (or don’t want to) update it for some reason? Worry not – you can keep using VeePN apps and services on your device.
How can you use VeePN with Windows 7, 8, and 8.1?
Again, updating your Windows to a newer version is the safest option. Alternatively, you have the following options:
- Use an older version of VeePN for Windows. You can install it by clicking here. Please note that it will get only the essential security updates and may lack some new functionality.
- Set up a VPN protocol manually. You can set up OpenVPN or WireGuard® manually on your Windows device. For more details, please get in touch with our customer support team.
- Use the VeePN browser extension. You can also replace the outdated app with our free VPN browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. But note that it’s a lightweight version of our full-fledged application (check out a detailed comparison of a full VPN app and browser extension in our recent article).
- Install VeePN on your Wi-Fi router. It’s also possible to set up a VPN for a router to cover your entire home network with a reliable VPN connection – here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do that.
No matter which operating system you’re running on, we will do our best to protect your online experience and let you browse the web privately. VeePN can be installed on up to 10 devices simultaneously within a single subscription. Enjoy VeePN’s premium features and stay safe!
