Are VPNs Legal in All Countries of the World?
Posted on 8th April 2021
The use of a VPN is a relatively inexpensive way to connect physically remote networks. There is no need to pay for WAN-connections, as all traffic between networks is transmitted via the Internet.
However, the question of whether are VPNs legal in each country of the modern world requires consideration. This article will discuss this issue in detail.
Why Is a VPN Useful?
VPN is the integration of individual machines or local area networks into a virtual network that ensures the integrity and security of transmitted data. It has the properties of a dedicated private network and allows transferring data between two computers over an intermediate network, such as the Internet.
VPNs have a wide range of economic advantages over other remote access methods. Having Internet access, any user can easily connect to the office network of his company. It should be noted that the general availability of data does not mean their insecurity. VPN security is an armor that protects all corporate information from unauthorized access. First of all, the data is transmitted in encrypted form. Only the owner of the cipher key can read the received data. Authentication involves verifying the integrity of the data and identifying the users involved in the VPN.
Main Components of VPN Networks
VPN is founded on three main methods used in the implementation of security measures in networks:
- Tunneling. Tunneling provides the transmission of encrypted data between two points – so that the entire network system that lies between these points is hidden from the sender and receiver of data. The tunnel’s transport environment picks up the data of the used network protocol at the entrance to the tunnel and delivers them to the exit without changes. The construction of the tunnel is enough to connect the two network nodes so that they look connected to one (local) network from the position of the software running on them;
- Authentication. Security is the main function of a VPN. All data from client computers passes through the Internet to the VPN server. Such a server can be located at a great distance from the client computer, and the data on the way to the organization’s network passes through the equipment of many providers. How to make sure that the data has not been intercepted or altered? Various methods of authentication and encryption are used for this purpose. Authentication is carried out either in an open form (clear-text password) or according to the following scheme: request-response. The client sends a password to the server. The server compares this to its table and either denies access or responds with confirmation;
- Encryption. Encryption ensures that almost no one can access packets when sent over the Internet. Currently, two encryption methods are supported: MPPE encryption or Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption is compatible only with MSCHAP; EAP-TLS automatically selects the length of the encryption key when negotiating parameters between the client and server.
Thus, tunneling, authentication, and encryption allow transferring data between two points through a public network, simulating the operation of a private (local) network.
Is It Allowed to Use VPN Services Worldwide?
You should understand that not all states allow VPN at the legislative level. For example, using torrents and downloading pirated content is prohibited in Europe. Therefore, using a VPN for torrents runs the risk of getting a very noticeable penalty. It is also undesirable to use VPNs in the UAE, Iraq, China, as there are some important restrictions in these countries. Read more below.
China
The application of VPN is strictly regulated by Chinese law. The country does not permit the widespread use of this technology and considers all VPNs illicit, with the exception of service providers accepted by the government.
Russia
In 2017, Russia passed a law to completely ban VPN services in the state.
Belarus
A few years ago, the government of Belarus decided to ban all anonymizers on the Internet, including VPN, which encrypts user traffic through Internet networks.
North Korea
This country also has a complete ban on the application of VPN technology.
UAE
Users may receive a big fine when using VPNs in the United Arab Emirates. The government sees this as a worthwhile measure and claims the technology allows Internet users to receive illegal content.
USA
In the USA, you can use VPN without any worries since there is no prohibition on the use of this technology in the country.
Japan
Japan is a close ally of the United States and follows that country’s example in many ways. As for the VPN, it is legal here. However, there are very few limitations on the Internet in Japan, so VPN is not often used.
Germany
It is allowed to use VPN services in Germany, but Internet users should still be careful about jurisdiction as the country is a member and complies with the rules of the Fourteen Eyes alliance.
Australia
VPNs are also legal in Australia. In addition, this country is rated as a key server location for most service providers.
Great Britain
Residents of the UK can use a VPN without any problems. However, users should be aware that Great Britain is an integral part of the Five Eyes alliance; that is, it conducts and exchanges digital surveillance information.
Bypass Bans and Blocks
As you can see, if some countries provide a complete ban on VPN applications, then the policy of other states is very loyal in this regard. Cybersecurity experts recommend that network users chose VPNs from the best VPN providers to ensure personal Internet security, regardless of country of residence or temporary residence. In order to choose the best VPN, it is recommended that you find the optimal combination of personal security, minimum latency, and global Internet availability.
